Why Urea Ice Melt?

Urea Ice Melt is a fertilizer-based deicer that is less corrosive than rock salt and kinder to nearby turf and shrubs.

Urea Ice Melt is the pick when protecting concrete, metal and landscaping matters more than melting at extreme lows. Urea is the same nitrogen compound used in fertilizers, so the runoff from your walk is far gentler on nearby turf and shrubs than a chloride salt.

About Urea Ice Melt

Urea Ice Melt is the pick when protecting concrete, metal and landscaping matters more than melting at extreme lows. Urea is the same nitrogen compound used in fertilizers, so the runoff from your walk is far gentler on nearby turf and shrubs than a chloride salt.

Why Customers Choose Urea Ice Melt

  • Fertilizer-Based Formula: Urea breaks down into nitrogen in soil rather than leaving chloride behind.
  • Gentler on Concrete and Metal: It is less corrosive than rock salt, helping reduce wear on driveways, sidewalks, railings and equipment.
  • Kinder to Lawns and Plants: When used as directed, it is less likely to burn turf, trees and landscaping than traditional salt.
  • Reliable Snow and Ice Control: It lowers the freezing point of water so ice loosens from treated surfaces.

How It Works

Urea dissolves into the thin film of water on top of ice and lowers its freezing point, which lets the ice soften and release. It melts more slowly than chloride products and is best for moderate winter temperatures, which is why it is popular around landscaping, metal structures, decks and walkways.

Questions about this product

Ask a question ›
What temperature does urea ice melt work in?
It works best in moderate winter temperatures, around 20°F and warmer. It melts more slowly than chloride products, so it is not the choice for deep cold.
Will it kill my grass?
Urea breaks down into nitrogen, so when used as directed it is less likely to burn turf and plants than traditional salt. Sweep up any excess and keep it out of storm drains, ponds and streams.
Is it safe for my pets?
No ice melt is meant to be eaten. Wipe pets' paws after walks, keep them from licking treated surfaces, and store the container out of reach.
Can I use it on new concrete?
Do not use any deicer on concrete less than one year old, or on concrete that is cracked, spalled or poorly sealed. On sound, cured concrete, apply a thin, even coat and sweep up leftovers.
How much should I use?
Follow the application rate on the package. A thin, even layer works faster and wastes less than a heavy coat.
How do I store it?
Keep it sealed in a cool, dry place. Ice melters pull moisture from the air and can clump if left open.
What sizes are available?
Size: 8 lb, 20 lb, 45 lb. The price shown is per 8 lb unless you pick another option.
When will it ship?
In-stock orders placed before 2:00 PM Eastern on a business day ship the same day from our Williamstown, New Jersey warehouse. Orders placed after the cut-off, on weekends or on holidays ship the next business day. Tracking is emailed as soon as it leaves. The box above the Add to cart button shows the live countdown and an arrival estimate for your ZIP.
Can I buy by the pallet?
Yes. Pallets ship by LTL freight and the rate depends on your delivery address, so we quote it rather than guess. The product price is the same price everyone pays, whether you buy one pail or a pallet; only the freight is quoted. Request a freight quote and we will come back with a delivered price.
Can I pick up at the warehouse?
Yes, by arrangement at our Williamstown, New Jersey warehouse, Monday to Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Saturday 8:00 AM to noon, Eastern. Contact us first so the warehouse can pull your order.
Can I return it?
Unused, unopened product in its original packaging can be returned within 30 days of delivery. Opened bags and pails cannot be returned. Read the full return policy.
