About magnesium chloride ice melt

Start With Your Lowest Temperature
Rock salt works best down to roughly 15°F. If your winters go colder than that but you do not need the extreme range of calcium chloride, magnesium chloride is a strong middle ground. Several of our products list a rating: the Magnesium Chloride Flakes Pail and Dead Sea Magnesium Chloride Pellets are rated to -15°F, and Blue Emperor Pet-Friendly Ice Melt is rated to -15°F as well. Where no rating is listed, follow the package.
How It Works
Magnesium chloride lowers the freezing point of water and turns ice into brine that loosens it from the pavement. Once the bond breaks, a shovel does the rest. Shovel first and treat the thin layer that is left for the best results.
Which One Should You Buy?
Straight Magnesium Chloride
For plain magnesium chloride, choose the Magnesium Chloride Flakes Pail in 8 or 35 lb, Dead Sea Magnesium Chloride Pellets in a 50 lb bag, or Safe Step 8300 in a 50 lb bag.
Pet-Friendlier Magnesium Blends
If pets share your walkways, Snow Shield Pet-Friendly Ice Melt (rated to 0°F), Sugar Mag (rated to 0°F), Pink Blizzard and CMA Blended Magnesium Chloride are gentler on paws than rock salt when used as directed. See more in our pet and concrete safe collection.
Treated Salt
GTS Green Treated Salt is treated salt with magnesium chloride, a budget-friendly way to add some magnesium chloride to your routine.

Magnesium Chloride vs Calcium Chloride
Calcium chloride releases heat as it dissolves and works in much colder temperatures, so it is the pick for the harshest days. Magnesium chloride is gentler on surfaces than rock salt and handles cold better than rock salt. If you want the coldest range, see our calcium chloride ice melt. If you want a lower cost per bag in mild weather, see rock salt.
How to Apply It
- Shovel first, then spread a thin, even layer at the package rate.
- Use a spreader on driveways and a scoop on steps.
- Sweep up leftover product once the ice is gone.
- Never use any deicer on concrete less than one year old.
Buying by the Pallet
One price for everyone, no contractor tiers, no volume discounts. Pallets ship by LTL freight and we quote only the freight. Request a quote on our bulk and pallet orders page.
Quick Answers
Is magnesium chloride safer for concrete than rock salt?
Magnesium chloride is gentler on surfaces than rock salt. Still, any deicer can damage concrete less than one year old, so do not use it on new concrete.
What temperature does magnesium chloride work to?
It varies by product. Several of ours, including the Magnesium Chloride Flakes Pail and Dead Sea Magnesium Chloride Pellets, are rated to -15°F. Check each label.
Magnesium chloride vs calcium chloride: which is better?
Calcium chloride works in the coldest weather. Magnesium chloride works colder than rock salt and is gentler on surfaces than rock salt. Choose based on your temperatures and your surface.
Flakes or pellets: which should I buy?
Both do the same job. Pick the form and package that suits the area you treat, from an 8 lb pail to a 50 lb bag.
Is magnesium chloride pet friendly?
Several products here are sold as pet-friendly or pet-friendlier formulas, such as Snow Shield, Blue Emperor and Sugar Mag. Use them as directed and wipe paws after walks.
