How Blends Work
Every deicer lowers the freezing point of water and turns ice into brine that loosens it from the pavement. Rock salt is economical but works best down to roughly 15°F. Calcium chloride releases heat as it dissolves and works in much colder temperatures. Magnesium chloride sits between them and is gentler on surfaces than rock salt. A blend mixes chemistries so one product can cover more of the conditions you see in a winter.
Formulas differ from product to product, so check each product page for what is in the bag and follow the package for rates and temperatures.
Which One Should You Buy?
Granules and Pellets
Morton Ice Melt Blend comes in a 50 lb bag. Safe Step Dual Blend 4300 is a 50 lb bag of pellets. Qik Joe Quad Melt Ultra is sold as granules in a 50 lb bag, and Do it Best Snow and Ice Melt Pellets comes in a 20 lb bag.
Flakes
If you prefer flakes, choose Qik Joe Polar Express in 20 or 50 lb bags, or Qik Joe Hot Stuff in a 50 lb bag.
Smaller Containers
For steps and walkways, Howard Johnson's Ice Melter comes in sizes from a 10 lb bag to a 50 lb bag, Salt Depot Ice Melt in a 9 lb jug or 20 lb bag, and Vaporizer Premium Blend in a 12 lb jug, 20 lb bag or 40 lb pail.

Blends vs Single Chemistries
If your winters are mild, straight rock salt is hard to beat on price. If you regularly see deep cold, straight calcium chloride is the specialist. Blends are for the middle: one product for a mix of conditions, so you do not have to stock two. For homes with pets, look at our pet-friendlier ice melt instead.
How to Apply It
- Shovel first and treat the thin layer that is left.
- Spread an even layer at the package rate. More is not better.
- Sweep up leftover product after the ice melts.
- Never use any deicer on concrete less than one year old.

Can I use a blend on new concrete?
No. Any deicer can damage concrete less than one year old. Hold off on ice melt for the first year.
