How Liquid Ice Melt Works
Every deicer works by lowering the freezing point of water. Granular products have to dissolve into brine before they start working. A liquid deicer is already in solution, so it goes to work on contact. When you apply it before a storm, it acts as an anti-icer and helps keep snow and ice from bonding to the pavement, so shoveling is easier.
Follow the directions on the label for timing and coverage, since they vary by product.
Which One Should You Buy?
- Liquid Ice Melt: sold as a fast-acting deicer and anti-icer, in a 32 oz bottle and 1, 2.5 and 5 gallon sizes. The small bottle is handy for steps, and the larger jugs suit driveways and walks.
- Peach Country Liquid Shield: a pet-friendly liquid ice melt in a 1 gallon jug. A good pick for homes with dogs.

Liquid vs Granular
Liquid is at its best before the storm and on light icing. Granular ice melt is the usual choice once ice has built up. A practical setup is both: a liquid for pre-treating and a bag of granular product for heavy ice. For granular options see our ice melt collection, and for gentler formulas see our pet and concrete safe ice melt.
How to Apply It
- Apply before the storm on clean, dry pavement to pre-treat, following the label.
- Use a sprayer for even coverage on driveways and walks.
- Shovel as usual once snow falls. Pre-treating makes it come up easier.
- Never use any deicer on concrete less than one year old.
What to Watch Out For
- Overapplying: more liquid does not work better. Follow the label.
- Plantings: keep overspray and runoff away from lawns and beds.
- Storage: keep containers tightly closed and out of reach of children and pets.
Buying in Bulk

Quick Answers
Is liquid ice melt better than granular?
They do different jobs. Liquid is well suited to pre-treating before a storm, while granular products are the usual choice for ice that has already formed. Many people use both.
How do I pre-treat my driveway before snow?
Apply a liquid anti-icer such as our Liquid Ice Melt before the storm, following the directions on the label. Shovel as usual once the snow falls.
How much liquid de-icer do I need?
Coverage varies by product, so follow the label. A 32 oz bottle or 1 gallon suits steps and walks, while 2.5 and 5 gallon sizes suit driveways.
Is liquid ice melt safe for concrete?
Any deicer, liquid included, can damage concrete less than one year old. Do not use it on new concrete.
Is there a pet-friendly liquid ice melt?
Yes. Peach Country Liquid Shield is sold as a pet-friendly liquid ice melt in a 1 gallon size. Use it as directed and wipe paws after walks.
