Why Urea Ice Melt?
Urea Ice Melt is a fertilizer-based deicer that is less corrosive than rock salt and kinder to nearby turf and shrubs.
Urea Ice Melt is the pick when protecting concrete, metal and landscaping matters more than melting at extreme lows. Urea is the same nitrogen compound used in fertilizers, so the runoff from your walk is far gentler on nearby turf and shrubs than a chloride salt.

Description
Fertilizer-Based Urea Ice Melt for Walks Near Lawns and Plants
Urea Ice Melt is a fertilizer-based deicer that is less corrosive than rock salt and kinder to nearby turf and shrubs. It works best in moderate winter temperatures, around 20°F and warmer, and comes in 8, 20 and 45 lb sizes.
About Urea Ice Melt
Urea Ice Melt is the pick when protecting concrete, metal and landscaping matters more than melting at extreme lows. Urea is the same nitrogen compound used in fertilizers, so the runoff from your walk is far gentler on nearby turf and shrubs than a chloride salt.
Why Customers Choose Urea Ice Melt
- Fertilizer-Based Formula: Urea breaks down into nitrogen in soil rather than leaving chloride behind.
- Gentler on Concrete and Metal: It is less corrosive than rock salt, helping reduce wear on driveways, sidewalks, railings and equipment.
- Kinder to Lawns and Plants: When used as directed, it is less likely to burn turf, trees and landscaping than traditional salt.
- Reliable Snow and Ice Control: It lowers the freezing point of water so ice loosens from treated surfaces.
How It Works
Urea dissolves into the thin film of water on top of ice and lowers its freezing point, which lets the ice soften and release. It melts more slowly than chloride products and is best for moderate winter temperatures, which is why it is popular around landscaping, metal structures, decks and walkways.

Where Not to Use It
- Extreme cold; it works best around 20°F and warmer
- Storm drains, ponds and streams
- Concrete less than one year old
- Cracked, spalled or poorly sealed concrete
How to Use Urea Ice Melt
- Shovel or plow loose snow first so the melter can reach the ice underneath.
- Spread a thin, even layer by hand scoop or with a broadcast or drop spreader. More is not better; a light, uniform coat works faster and wastes less.
- Give it a few minutes to break the bond between the ice and the pavement, then shovel away the loosened slush.
- Before a storm, pre-treat walkways and steps with a light application to help keep ice from bonding.
- Sweep up leftover granules once surfaces are dry so they are not tracked indoors.
