Frequently Asked Questions
Hello, how can we help?
Orders
How do I check my order status?
We email you tracking as soon as your order ships. You can also sign in to your account to see your past orders and tracking.
Can I change my shipping address?
Contact us as soon as possible through our contact page. We cannot change the address once the order has shipped.
Can I change or cancel my order?
Contact us through our contact page as soon as you can. Orders placed by 2:00 PM Eastern on a business day leave our warehouse that day, so the sooner we hear from you, the better.
I did not get an order confirmation email. What should I do?
Check your spam or promotions folder first. If it is not there, message us through our contact page with the name and email address you ordered with, and we will look it up.
How do I order a pallet?
Send the products and quantities you need through our bulk and pallet orders page, and we will quote the LTL freight to your address. The product price is the same as buying by the bag. Browse pallet-friendly products in bulk and pallet orders.
Shipping & delivery
When will my order ship?
Orders placed by 2:00 PM Eastern on a business day ship that day. Orders placed after 2:00 PM, on weekends or on holidays ship the next business day. Freight and special-order items can take longer, and we will contact you with a ship date if so.
How long does delivery take?
Ground shipping typically takes 1 to 5 business days after your order ships, and LTL freight typically takes 1 to 10 business days (both are estimates). Shipping is charged per item and shown at checkout. You get an email with tracking once your order leaves our warehouse.
Where do you ship?
We ship to all 50 U.S. states, but not to P.O. boxes or APO/FPO addresses. Alaska, Hawaii and other non-contiguous locations may cost more and take longer. Outside the United States? Contact us and we will tell you what we can arrange.
Can I pick up my order?
Yes, by arrangement only at our Williamstown, NJ warehouse, Monday to Friday 8 AM to 5 PM and Saturday 8 AM to noon Eastern. Contact us first so we can pull your order and set a pickup time. Please do not come without arranging it.
What if my order arrives damaged or wrong?
Tell us within 5 business days of delivery by sending your order number and photos through our contact page, and we will replace the item or refund you. For freight deliveries, inspect the load and note any damage on the bill of lading before you sign.
Returns & refunds
How do I return something?
Most items can be returned within 30 days of delivery if they are unused, unopened and in their original packaging. Message us through our contact page with your order number and a short reason, and we will send a return label and instructions; please do not ship anything back before you hear from us. Drop-offs at our warehouse are possible by arrangement.
What can't be returned?
- Opened bags, pails, jugs or tubes, including partly used product
- Product that has been exposed to moisture or has clumped
- Items returned more than 30 days after delivery
- Special orders, custom-blended product and custom pallets
Who pays for return shipping?
You cover return shipping unless the return is our fault. We send you a prepaid label and deduct its cost from your refund, and the original shipping is not refunded. If we sent the wrong item or it arrived damaged, we cover the return shipping and replace or refund it in full.
When will I get my refund?
Once your return arrives and we have checked its condition, we refund your original payment method within 5 to 7 business days. How quickly it shows after that is up to your bank or card issuer.
Payment
What payment methods do you accept, and is checkout secure?
You can pay with the major credit cards and the digital wallets shown at checkout. Payments are processed through Shopify's secure checkout, and we never see your full card number.
Can I pay over time?
Shop Pay Installments is offered at checkout on eligible orders, so you can split the price into 4 interest-free payments.
Do contractors or large buyers get a different price?
No. Everyone pays the same product price, whether you buy one pail or a full pallet, and there are no contractor tiers or volume discounts. For pallets, we only quote the freight to your address through our bulk and pallet orders page.
Products & how-to
Which ice melt is right for me?
Think about the lowest temperature you see, the surface you are treating and whether pets are involved. Rock salt is the budget choice for milder cold, calcium chloride works in deeper cold, and CMA and chloride-reduced blends are gentler on paws and surfaces. Our salt and ice melt buying guide walks through each one, or tell us about your property.
How do I choose ice melt by temperature?
Start with the coldest temperature you expect. Rock salt works best down to roughly 15°F, magnesium chloride keeps working colder, and calcium chloride works in much colder weather, such as Power Ice Melt 96 Calcium Chloride Pellets, rated to -25°F. Each product lists its own rating, so check the product page and the label.
Rock salt vs calcium chloride: which should I buy?
Rock salt costs less and works well down to roughly 15°F. Calcium chloride releases heat as it dissolves, so it works faster and in much colder temperatures. Many people keep rock salt for mild storms and calcium chloride for the coldest days.
How much ice melt should I use?
Follow the application rate on the bag or pail label, because it varies by product, surface and storm. Spread thinly and evenly: more product does not melt faster and can leave residue. For a property or a route, ask for a freight quote; everyone pays the same product price and only pallet freight is quoted.
Is ice melt safe for my pets?
No ice melt is completely risk free. Pet-friendlier melts, such as CMA blends, are gentler on paws than rock salt when used as directed, but still wipe paws after walks and keep pets from eating it. See our pet-friendlier and concrete-friendlier ice melts.
Can I use ice melt on new concrete?
No. Do not use any ice melt on concrete that is less than one year old, because any deicer can damage it. On new concrete, use a non-melting traction product such as Glacier Grip Stone Dust Traction Grit and shovel early.
How do I store ice melt so it does not clump?
Keep bags and pails sealed, covered and off bare concrete in a dry spot. Ice melt pulls moisture from the air, so an open bag can cake. Reseal pails after each use, and remember that product exposed to moisture or clumped cannot be returned.
What is liquid ice melt used for?
Liquid ice melt is sprayed on pavement before a storm so snow and ice do not bond to the surface, and it can also be used on existing ice. Shop Liquid Ice Melt Deicer and Anti-Icer or the full liquid ice melt collection, and follow the label for rates.
Can I get a safety data sheet?
Yes. Check our safety data sheets page. If you do not see your product there, contact us with the product name and we will send you the manufacturer safety data sheet.
Which water softener salt should I buy?
We carry solar salt crystals, pellets, rust remover formulas and potassium chloride. Check your softener manual for the salt type it recommends, and do not mix salt types in the brine tank. Shop water softener salt.
How often should I add water softener salt?
Check the brine tank about once a month and keep it about half full. How fast you use salt depends on your water and household use, so a quick monthly look is the easiest habit. Pellets such as Solar Salt Pellets, 40 lb are easy to top off.
How much pool salt do I need, and when do I add it?
Test the water first, then follow your salt chlorine generator manufacturer's target level and chart for your pool volume. Most people add salt at opening, after heavy rain or backwashing, and whenever a test reads low. Shop 40 lb bags and small top-off sizes in pool and spa salt.
What salt do I use in a salt water hot tub?
Use salt sold for spas, such as Home and Country USA Hot Tub and Spa Salt. A spa holds far less water than a pool, so add small amounts and follow your spa system manual for the target level.
Does my dishwasher need salt?
Only if it has a built-in water softener with a salt compartment, usually under the lower rack. Check your manual, then use Home and Country USA Dishwasher Salt, not table salt or ice melt.
What should I know about livestock salt blocks?
Always provide fresh water wherever you put out salt or minerals. Read each label for the species it is made for: some mineral mixes, such as those with added copper, are not for sheep. See livestock and mineral salt.
Can I put out deer minerals or a salt lick?
Check your state regulations first, because rules on baiting, minerals and salt licks vary by state and can change. Where they are allowed, see our deer minerals and salt licks.
