About Magnesium Chloride Flakes Ice Melt

Magnesium chloride ice melt flakes are a favorite of people who care about their concrete and their landscaping. The thin flakes start melting on contact down to -15°F, leave very little residue behind, and are far less harsh on paws, plants and paver surfaces than rock salt.

Why Customers Choose Magnesium Chloride Flakes Ice Melt

  • Works on Contact to -15°F: Starts melting immediately, even in extreme cold.
  • Gentler on Paws and Plants: Less harsh than rock salt when used as directed.
  • Concrete Friendly: Formulated to reduce surface damage and spalling on concrete and pavers.
  • Low Residue: Leaves minimal white film to track indoors.
  • Resealable Pail: Keeps flakes dry and free flowing through multiple storms.

How It Works

Magnesium chloride pulls moisture from the air and dissolves into brine quickly, releasing a small amount of heat as it does. Flakes have a large surface area, so they spread thin and start melting faster than big crystals.

Where It Works Best

Paver patios, stamped concrete, homes with pets and entryways where residue is a problem.

Where Not to Use It

  • Cracked, spalled or poorly sealed concrete
  • Not for pets or children to eat; keep pets from licking treated surfaces

How to Use Magnesium Chloride Flakes Ice Melt

  1. Shovel or plow loose snow first so the melter can reach the ice underneath.
  2. Spread a thin, even layer by hand scoop or with a broadcast or drop spreader. More is not better; a light, uniform coat works faster and wastes less.
  3. Give it a few minutes to break the bond between the ice and the pavement, then shovel away the loosened slush.
  4. Before a storm, pre-treat walkways and steps with a light application to help keep ice from bonding.
  5. Sweep up leftover granules once surfaces are dry so they are not tracked indoors.
  6. Keep the lid tightly closed between uses. Ice melters pull moisture from the air and can clump if left open.
