About Calcium Chloride Ice Melt Pellets

Calcium chloride ice melt is the professional's choice when temperatures crash. These pellets give off heat as they dissolve, start working on contact and keep melting far below the point where rock salt quits. Choose the pail size that fits your property, from an 8 lb step-and-porch bucket to a 40 lb commercial pail.

Why Customers Choose Calcium Chloride Ice Melt Pellets

  • Extreme-Cold Performance: Calcium chloride stays effective at temperatures far below where sodium chloride slows down.
  • Heat-Releasing Pellets: An exothermic reaction warms the ice as the pellet dissolves, so it bores through quickly.
  • Fast Brine: It pulls moisture from the air to start forming brine right away.
  • Pellet Shape: Round pellets roll into cracks and melt downward instead of spreading sideways.
  • Resealable Pail: Keeps moisture-hungry pellets dry and free flowing between storms.

How It Works

Calcium chloride is hygroscopic, meaning it attracts water, and exothermic, meaning it releases heat as it dissolves. Together those properties let it create melting brine faster and at much lower temperatures than rock salt, which is why it is widely used on commercial entrances, ramps and steps where ice cannot be tolerated.

Where It Works Best

Commercial entrances, ramps, steps, shaded walks and anyone dealing with subzero cold.

Where Not to Use It

  • Concrete less than one year old
  • Lawns and plantings
  • Not a pet-friendly product; wipe paws after walks
  • Bare hands; wear gloves, as it can irritate skin

How to Use Calcium Chloride Ice Melt Pellets

  1. Shovel or plow loose snow first so the melter can reach the ice underneath.
  2. Spread a thin, even layer by hand scoop or with a broadcast or drop spreader. More is not better; a light, uniform coat works faster and wastes less.
  3. Give it a few minutes to break the bond between the ice and the pavement, then shovel away the loosened slush.
  4. Before a storm, pre-treat walkways and steps with a light application to help keep ice from bonding.
  5. Sweep up leftover granules once surfaces are dry so they are not tracked indoors.
  6. Keep the lid tightly closed between uses. Ice melters pull moisture from the air and can clump if left open.
  7. Calcium chloride can irritate skin; wear gloves when spreading by hand.

Questions about this product

Ask a question ›
Calcium chloride vs rock salt: which is better?
Calcium chloride attracts moisture and releases heat as it dissolves, so it makes brine faster and at much lower temperatures than rock salt. Rock salt is the more economical choice for normal winter weather.
Is calcium chloride bad for concrete?
Use the lightest effective application, and never use it on concrete less than one year old or on concrete that is cracked, spalled or poorly sealed. Sweep up leftovers once the surface is dry.
Is calcium chloride safe for pets?
Calcium chloride is not a pet-friendly product. Wipe paws after walks, or choose a pet-friendlier melter for areas your pets use.
Pellets or flakes: which calcium chloride is better?
These round pellets roll into cracks and melt downward instead of spreading sideways, which suits steps, ramps and entrances.
How much should I use?
Follow the application rate on the package. A thin, even layer works faster and wastes less than a heavy coat.
How do I store it?
Keep it sealed in a cool, dry place. Ice melters pull moisture from the air and can clump if left open.
What sizes are available?
Size: 8 lb Bag, 8 lb Pail, 15 lb Pail, 20 lb Pail, 30 lb Pail, 40 lb Pail. The price shown is per 8 lb bag unless you pick another option.

In-stock orders placed before 2:00 PM Eastern on a business day ship the same day from our Williamstown, New Jersey warehouse. Orders placed after the cut-off, on weekends or on holidays ship the next business day. Tracking is emailed as soon as it leaves. The product price is the same price everyone pays, whether you buy one pail or a pallet; only the freight is quoted. Request a freight quote and we will come back with a delivered price.
