About Rock Salt Ice Melt Pail

When you just need clean, coarse rock salt that does its job, this is it. Our rock salt ice melt comes in resealable pails, so it stays dry and ready by the door, with a granule size that bites into ice quickly and adds traction while it works.

Why Customers Choose Rock Salt Ice Melt Pail

  • Coarse, Fast-Biting Granules: Larger crystals cut into ice and snow for quick melting and added grip.
  • Budget-Friendly Value: Rock salt is an economical way to keep walkways clear in normal winter weather.
  • Home or Business: Right-sized pails for residential steps and walks up to storefronts and small lots.
  • Stays Dry: The resealable pail keeps moisture out between storms.

How It Works

Rock salt dissolves into brine that lowers the freezing point of water, eating through snowpack and loosening ice from the pavement. The coarse grains also give you traction underfoot while they melt.

Rock Salt Ice Melt Pail Specifications

Ingredient Sodium chloride (rock salt)
Form Coarse granules
Sizes 8 lb, 20 lb and 45 lb resealable pails
Use Residential and commercial

Where It Works Best

Everyday snow days, budget-conscious homeowners and businesses that go through a lot of product.

Where Not to Use It

  • Concrete less than one year old
  • Cracked, spalled or poorly sealed concrete
  • Lawns, garden beds and plantings
  • Deep cold below roughly 15°F; choose calcium or magnesium chloride instead

How to Use Rock Salt Ice Melt Pail

  1. Shovel or plow loose snow first so the melter can reach the ice underneath.
  2. Spread a thin, even layer by hand scoop or with a broadcast or drop spreader. More is not better; a light, uniform coat works faster and wastes less.
  3. Give it a few minutes to break the bond between the ice and the pavement, then shovel away the loosened slush.
  4. Before a storm, pre-treat walkways and steps with a light application to help keep ice from bonding.
  5. Sweep up leftover granules once surfaces are dry so they are not tracked indoors.
  6. Keep the lid tightly closed between uses. Ice melters pull moisture from the air and can clump if left open.

Questions about this product

Ask a question ›
What temperature does rock salt stop working?
Rock salt works best when pavement temperatures are above roughly 15°F and slows down as it gets colder. For deep cold, choose a calcium chloride or magnesium chloride melter.
Is rock salt bad for concrete?
Rock salt can harm young concrete, so never use it on concrete less than one year old or on concrete that is cracked, spalled or poorly sealed. On sound concrete, use a thin, even layer and sweep up the excess.
Will rock salt kill my grass?
Rock salt can harm grass and plants. Keep it off lawns and garden beds, and sweep up any excess once the pavement is clear.
Is rock salt safe for dogs?
Rock salt is not a pet-friendlier product. Wipe your dog's paws after walks, keep pets from licking treated surfaces, and consider a pet-friendlier melter for areas your pets use.
How much should I use?
Follow the application rate on the package. A thin, even layer works faster and wastes less than a heavy coat.
How do I store it?
Keep it sealed in a cool, dry place. Ice melters pull moisture from the air and can clump if left open.
What sizes are available?
Size: 8 lb, 20 lb, 45 lb. The price shown is per 8 lb unless you pick another option.
When will it ship?

Orders placed after the cut-off, on weekends or on holidays ship the next business day. Tracking is emailed as soon as it leaves. The product price is the same price everyone pays, whether you buy one pail or a pallet; only the freight is quoted. Request a freight quote and we will come back with a delivered price.
